In July 2026, artists, seekers, and lovers of sacred tradition will have a rare opportunity to step into the ancient world of Byzantine iconography right here in the Midwest. From July 6–11, 2026, a six-day Icon Painting Workshop will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, offering participants a fully immersive experience in one of Christianity’s oldest and most revered art forms.
Led by master iconographer Theodoros Papadopoulos, this intensive workshop is open to all skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced painters seeking a deeper understanding of sacred technique. Unlike modern devotional art, iconography follows a disciplined visual theology passed down through centuries. Every line, color, and proportion carries meaning — not merely aesthetic, but spiritual.
Over the course of six days, participants will learn the traditional egg tempera method used in Byzantine icon painting. Working step by step, each student will complete a classic Virgin Mary with Child icon, guided carefully from the first drawing to the final highlights. All materials are included, allowing students to focus entirely on the process rather than logistics.

What sets this workshop apart is its balance of hands-on instruction and spiritual depth. Iconography is not simply painting; it is a form of prayer expressed through disciplined craft. Daily demonstrations and instruction reveal not only how icons are made, but why they are made this way — grounding artistic practice in centuries of Orthodox Christian tradition.
Hosting the workshop at St. George Greek Orthodox Church provides a fitting and authentic setting. The church’s sacred atmosphere supports the contemplative nature of icon painting, offering participants a rare chance to create within a space shaped by worship, reverence, and continuity with the past.
This six-day workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn the sacred discipline of Byzantine iconography through traditional egg tempera techniques, guided step by step by a master iconographer, right here in the Quad Cities.
Event Organizers

For those interested in sacred art, religious history, or traditional painting techniques, this workshop offers something increasingly difficult to find: direct transmission from a master practitioner, rather than a diluted or modernized interpretation. It is an opportunity to slow down, work with intention, and engage an art form that has endured precisely because it resists haste.
The official event listing — including dates, location, and ticket access — can be found on the Evvnt event page. If you are considering attending or sharing the event with others who may be interested, visit the event page directly to learn more and secure a place.
